Becoming a Foster Parent
(from the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) web site, http://www.gov.bc.ca/mcf, please visit this site for additional information)
Anyone can apply to become a foster parent as long as they submit to
a criminal record check, pass a medical exam and provide three
references.
- When applying to provide foster care, a thorough home study is
conducted by ministry staff. All family members are interviewed,
including any children.
- Once a family is approved, the ministry and family enter into an
agreement outlining the terms and conditions of the care to be provided.
- Restricted foster agreements last for one year and are for only one
child. Regular and specialized foster agreements last anywhere from 18
months up to three years and are reviewed annually.
